Cooper initiates the move, then sacrifices himself and TARS midway to keep Amelia on-course to reach the planet. Cooper and Amelia regain control of the craft, but with limited fuel, must use a gravity-assist around Gargantua to propel them to the third and final planet of Dr Edmunds. Romilly is killed by an explosion at the base, and Mann, who had attempted to hijack the Endurance, dies himself in a failed docking move. Meanwhile, on the second planet, Cooper, Amelia and Romilly discover that its explorer, Mann, falsified signals about the ice world's habitability while hoping to be rescued. She discovers her father's old wristwatch on the bookshelf, noticing its seconds-hand ticks irregularly. Left alone to complete his work, Murph turns to her childhood bedroom for clues as the site of the initial anomaly. He predicts humanity on Earth is bound to perish, and dies. ![]() Brand reveals that his gravity-equation, purported to solve the problem of transporting humanity off Earth in a mass exodus, is unsolvable. Back on Earth, an adult Murph works as a scientist at NASA with Dr Brand. Romilly, who had remained in orbit, has aged 23 years in the few hours that Cooper and Amelia were gone. Cooper and Amelia survive and return to the Endurance, only to find that time aboard has passed much faster than on the planet, due to time dilation. Doyle is swept away within minutes, and Miller is presumed to have died similarly. Passing through the wormhole, the crew arrive at the first planet, previously explored by Laura Miller, which they discover to be an ocean world with massive tidal waves. The Endurance spacecraft takes off with three other NASA scientists − Romilly, Doyle and Brand's daughter Amelia − as well as two intelligent robots, TARS and CASE. Cooper struggles to leave behind Murph, but agrees to participate anyway. A previous NASA mission has uncovered three planets capable of supporting life, each of which orbits the supermassive blackhole called Gargantua in the other galaxy. Seeing Cooper's arrival as a sign, the mission leader, Dr Brand, asks him to pilot the crew due to past experience. At NASA, a team of scientists is preparing to travel to a mysterious wormhole near Saturn, leading to potentially habitable planets in a faraway galaxy. Cooper reads the pattern as GPS coordinates, and following it, discovers a secret NASA facility. One evening after a dust storm, Cooper discovers a gravitational anomaly in Murph's bedroom, creating patterns of falling particles. ![]() Cooper's family, which includes his children, Tom and Murph, and his father-in-law Donald, survive by pursuing farming, much like most of humanity. In 2067, humanity is facing extinction following a global famine caused by ecocide. Interstellar was nominated for five awards at the 87th Academy Awards, winning Best Visual Effects, and received numerous other accolades. ![]() It has been praised by astronomers for its scientific accuracy and portrayal of theoretical astrophysics. The film received generally positive reviews from critics and grossed over $681 million worldwide ($703 million after subsequent re-releases), making it the tenth-highest-grossing film of 2014. In the United States, it was first released on film stock, expanding to venues using digital projectors. ![]() Interstellar premiered in Los Angeles on October 26, 2014. Kip Thorne, a Caltech theoretical physicist and 2017 Nobel laureate in Physics, was an executive producer, acted as a scientific consultant, and wrote a tie-in book, The Science of Interstellar. Set in a dystopian future where humanity is embroiled in a catastrophic blight and famine, the film follows a group of astronauts who travel through a wormhole near Saturn in search of a new home for humankind.īrothers Christopher and Jonathan Nolan wrote the screenplay, which had its origins in a script Jonathan developed in 2007 and was originally set to be directed by Steven Spielberg.
